HEALTH Secretary Alan Johnson was in Middlesbrough last week to officially open the North-east’s first GP-led health centre.

The Resolution Health Centre in North Ormesby Health Village will see patients from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, as part of a £11m shake up to increase access to family doctor services on Teesside.

It is the first of four walk-in health centres that will be built on Teesside by 2010. Patients do not have to register to make appointments and can walk in and wait for the next available slot.

After a tour of the centre, Mr Johnson, said: “This centre will enable any member of the public to see a doctor or nurse between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year, either as a registered patient or whilst remaining registered with their existing GP.

“These centres are in addition to existing practices and together with the 68% of surgeries in Middlesbrough that are now offering extended opening either in the mornings, evenings or at weekends, mean it will be easier for local people to see a doctor at a time convenient for them.”

Established family doctors have raised fears the new centres will take their patients away but Mr Johnson said it was “perverse” to campaign against the opening of new services.

“It’s not about threatening GP practices, it’s about adding capacity.”

He stressed that people do not have to leave their existing doctor to use the centre which will also offer additional services such as advice on stopping smoking and healthy living.
