HIS Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester has officially opened a new state-of-the-art health centre in Portishead.

Prince Richard, was flown to the town’s football club, before being driven by car to the Marina Healthcare Centre at Haven View, where he unveiled a plaque, which will now be displayed in the building.

He also signed the guest book, took a tour of the building, met staff and patients and enjoyed a buffet lunch with staff, patients and local dignitaries.

The primary care resource centre is the largest health facility to be built in North Somerset for 20 years and is already providing much-needed new facilities for the former Harbourside Family Practices GPs.

It can support a patient list of 15,000 and has a range of services via GP referral, for patients living all over Somerset.

These include physiotherapy and lymphodema clinics, as well as child and adult continence services, pulmonary and cardiac rehab and complex wound treatment.

The three-storey building provides an environmentally friendly working space for 50 employees accommodating the needs of both healthcare professionals and patients in the 21st century and includes 12 consulting and examination rooms two treatment rooms, a practice manager’s office and ancillary accommodation.

It also features seven further consulting and examination rooms and a physiotherapy suite for up to 30 patients.

Architects Stride Treglown designed the healthcare centre, which was then built by Taunton-based Gadd Construct.

It features an unusual blue glass sculpture, which was designed by Jake Peggs and partner Celia Frank of Opus Glass Design, Bristol, forms the focal point of the reception area.

The designers said the sculpture was inspired by the reflections of water in the nearby marina and would help to bring a calming and healing atmosphere to the reception area.

NHS North Somerset chairman Stephen Harrison said; “We were delighted that His Royal Highness officially opened the Marina Healthcare Centre.

“We are immensely proud of the centre and of the way in which it is providing the best accessible care to patients from the former Harbourside Family Practice, giving them brand new facilities as well as access to other primary care services.

“It is a practical example of how we are addressing the issues facing the health and well-being of people in North Somerset and developing services to meet their needs.”
