Conservative shadow health minister Lord McColl is a paid consultant to a private healthcare firm in direct competition with the NHS, it has been claimed.

According to the Times, Lord McColl is being paid to consult for Endeavour Health, a company set up by two hedge fund advisers, which is pitching itself as Britain’s first comprehensive private GP network.

The minister’s involvement with a private provider risks further embarrassment to the the party, which has been grappling with internal divisions as its leaders attempt to portray it as ‘the party of the NHS’.

Conservative leader David Cameron – who was recently forced to distance the party from comments made by MEP Daniel Hannan, after he claimed the NHS was ‘a 60-year mistake’ – said he was satisfied that there was nothing ‘improper’ about Lord McColl’s involvement with the firm.

Mr Cameron told GMTV: ‘My understanding is that, yes, he has carried out a couple of consultations for this private company. All of that has been properly declared.

‘I think he himself has said that if there is anything improper about what this company has done, he’ll sever any contact with it. I think that’s a perfectly satisfactory state of affairs.’
