Primecare opens new NHS walk-in centre for Dudley residents

News Release | 13 July 2009

Leading commercial health care provider Primecare opens a brand new walk-in centre for people in the borough of Dudley.

The health centre opens on 13 July 2009 and is available 8am – 8pm seven days a week, offering fast, convenient access to NHS doctors and nurses. The Walk-in Centre is based at the Holly Hall Clinic, on Stourbridge Road, Dudley.

Anyone can use the walk-in centre, including commuters into the borough, visitors, and those not registered with a GP practice. Appointments can be booked ahead or patients can visit with no need for an appointment.

The Walk-in Centre offers all the services expected from a family doctor or nurse, ranging from childhood immunisations to prescriptions for medication and advice for those with long-term health conditions.

Additionally, the centre offers some minor surgery, help for minor injuries (sprains, strains, cuts and bruises) and will offer specialised services for those with heart failure, diabetes and learning disabilities.

Walk-in Centre manager Beryl Wickstead said: “We’ve made it easy to see a doctor or nurse at the Walk-in Centre. Open from 8am until 8pm, seven days a week and every day of the year, we offer NHS healthcare when you need it. There is no need to register. You can use these services when it is convenient and keep registered with your usual GP practice.”

Gateway Plaza secures Health Centre tenant

Press Release

Quest Property and Landmark Development Project’s Gateway Plaza development in Barnsley has secured a deal with Barnsley Civic Healthcare to deliver a NHS health centre within the mixed use scheme.

Barnsley Civic Healthcare is a partnership with Primecare, one of the UK’s leading providers of health service solutions, and Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

In a deal secured for Gateway Plaza by appointed agent, Smiths Chartered Surveyors, Barnsley Civic Healthcare has taken an 8,342sq ft unit fronting Sackville Street. The health centre, which will open in the summer, will offer booked appointments with doctors and nurses as well as a walk-in service.

There will be capacity for up to 2,000 patients to register with the health centre and 6,000 people per year are expected to access walk-in care. The centre will also offer a minor injury and illness service as an alternative to visiting A&E.

The health centre forms part of the NHS’s broader plans for increasing the healthcare provision within Barnsley and is one of four new surgeries due to open in the next few years.

Director of Landmark Development Projects, Chris Gilman, said; “Barnsley Civic Healthcare will be a welcome addition to our tenant mix at Gateway Plaza and will deliver a much-needed service to the town. Our scheme architects, Axis Architecture, have worked with the health centre team to design the centre and Browns Construction is currently undertaking the fit-out. With the offices now also at the fit-out stage and the hotel and restaurant scheduled for completion in November, the scheme is making fantastic progress.”

Andrew Corbett from Smiths Chartered Surveyors, joint agent with Jones Lang LaSalle and Lambert Smith Hampton, said; “Barnsley Civic Healthcare were looking for a unit in which to house their new, modern facility in a town centre location that was easily accessible by car and on foot. Gateway Plaza was able to meet their needs for well-proportioned space that could be fit-out quickly and to a high standard. This deal is really positive news for both the development and the people of the town who will benefit from this much-needed new service.”

NHS Barnsley’s Chief Executive, Ailsa Claire, said; “The health centre at Gateway Plaza is the first step in ensuring that everyone in Barnsley receives a consistently high standard of care at a time and place to suit them. We want our health services to live up to the world class standards that people in Barnsley deserve and to truly be a health service which supports people to live well, live longer and take care of their own health. The Gateway Plaza health centre will take us one step closer to achieving our goal.”

New World-class Health Centre Opens its Doors

News Release | 16 July 2009

Barnsley’s new world-class GP-led health centre, run by Primecare, is set to benefit thousands of local people who work and live in the town when it opens its doors on Monday 20 July.

The new health centre – the first of its kind for the town – is based in the Gateway Plaza development near Westgate in the town centre, where it will bring the biggest benefits to the most people.

Open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, every day of the year, the health centre will offer both walk-in services and bookable appointments with doctors and nurses.

As well as the full range of GP services, the centre will offer a minor injuries and illness service as an alternative to going to accident and emergency at the hospital.

NHS Barnsley’s chief executive, Ailsa Claire, said: “This is just the first step in ensuring that every person in Barnsley receives a consistently high standard of care at a time and place to suit them.

“We want our health services to live up to the world class standards that people in Barnsley deserve and to truly be a health service which supports people to live well, live longer and take care of their own health.”

The GP-led health centre expects to see around 6,000 walk-in patients a year. But there are also 2,000 places for patients to register with the centre’s GP practice – ideal for those working in the town centre.

The health centre is one of four new primary care services across the Borough – adding to the new Priory Campus GP practice which opened in April this year. And two further new GP practices are set to follow in Grimethorpe and Goldthorpe in August and September respectively.

Following consultation with local people last year, these new services have been directly shaped by the views of people across the borough and come as part of NHS Barnsley’s wider plan to ensure everyone in Barnsley has more choice and access to the very best health services.

Local people will benefit from the new ways of working set out by NHS Barnsley as well as improved access, longer opening hours, new services in the community and more doctors when the new services are up and running.

The new GP-led health centre will create 20 new jobs – both clinical and administrative – for Barnsley.

Barnsley Civic Healthcare – a partnership between Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and leading primary care services provider, Primecare – will run the new centre.

Dr Ashton, who is the lead GP for the health centre, said: “I am delighted to be working at the new health centre in Barnsley that will make it easy for people to see a doctor or nurse. We offer NHS health care when you need it, from 8am – 8pm, seven days a week. Patients can register with us or use our services at their convenience, and keep registered with their usual GP practice. Our friendly team looks forward to welcoming you to our high quality services.”
