NHS Herefordshire, the leader for healthcare in the county, has taken a major step towards opening a new GP-led, walk-in health centre in Hereford. The primary care trust announced today (Thursday 8 January 2009) that Nestor Primecare – one of the largest independent providers of health and social care in the UK – has bid successfully to provide the service.

In addition to providing out-of-hours medical and dental services for the county for the next five years, Nestor Primecare will be developing the new centre, which is expected to open in the summer. The new centre will enable patients to walk in and see a doctor or nurse between 8am and 8pm seven days a week. Patients will be able to use the new services whilst remaining registered with their own GP and it is anticipated that it will reduce the high workload of Hereford County Hospital’s accident and emergency department.

“NHS Herefordshire is committing to ensuring that local people have more choice, greater convenience and flexible, responsive and accessible services that fit in with their lifestyles and needs”, said Chris Bull, chief executive of NHS Herefordshire.

‘We had a number of interesting bids to provide the new walk in health centre, and following an in-depth and robust procurement process, we are pleased to announce Nestor Primecare as the successful bidder”.

Nestor Primecare has worked with the primary care trust to provide out-of-hours doctor and dentist services in Herefordshire for the last five years. NHS Herefordshire followed a stringent procurement process to ensure that the winning bidder would provide the services that compliment existing GP services and improve access for patients. The process started in May 2008 and has finished with the announcement that Nestor Primecare has been identified as the preferred provider. The primary care trust and Nestor Primecare will now be working with local GPs, health care providers and patient groups to ensure that the new service improves access to patients.

David Rose, managing director of Nestor Primecare’s health division, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide services to the people of Herefordshire for five more years. In addition to the continued provision of out of hours services, the opportunity to provide the new, easy to access 8am to 8pm walk in centre in Hereford is a great opportunity to provide fast access to GP appointments.”
