Targets for NHS ‘distracting’

Whitehall targets for the National Health Service are distracting boards and leading to unnecessary deaths from avoidable mistakes, a committee of MPs warns today.

The Commons health committee investigation calls on the NHS to do more to make services safer for patients, after revealing that there are at least 11,000 avoidable deaths or incidents of “severe harm” every year.

It concludes there has been “insufficient progress” to make patient safety a priority across the service.
