Central Canvey Primary Care Centre, the new £8.3m state-of-the-art health care facility on Canvey Island, South East Essex has welcomed its first patients.

The first practices to move in, the Island Surgery (Dr Jena & Dr Ana Linacero) and Dr Chaudhury’s practice, opened their doors on Monday and will be followed shortly by three more GP practices, namely Grafton Surgery, Leigh Beck Surgery and Oaklands Surgery, who will be moving in to the new centre in over the next few weeks.

All practices are expected to be up and running by the end of March. Each GP will have their own colour coded area so patients will be able to see the same GP, receptionists and other practice staff, but in a new purpose built primary care centre.

In addition to GP surgeries, a wide range of additional community health services will be available, such as speech and language services, community nursing services, children’s services, minor operations and a community pharmacy.

Central Canvey is the first project financed and constructed by South East Essex LIFT, a public private partnership between South East Essex PCT, Community Health Partnerships and a private sector consortium led by Assura LIFT Holdings Limited.

Further schemes are being planned as part of an innovative approach that will see a number of projects across the rest of the south east Essex over the next 25 years where GPs, community nursing teams, the voluntary sector and social services will be able to offer a variety of services in purpose built centres that are closer to people’s homes.

Commenting on the opening, Elaine Siew, managing director of Assura LIFT Holdings said: “We are delighted to be welcoming patients into their brand new health centre. The new building is bright, modern and conveniently located.

“This building is the first stage in the realisation of a vision and is what local people deserve. It is the first of up to 11 new centres to be built across the region which will provide the very best in healthcare for local people.”

Ann Mortimer, primary care centre manager at NHS South East Essex added: “It’s a fabulous building, light, airy and comfortable and it is easy to find your way around. It makes it so much easier for patients with so many services all on one site. A few people have already popped in to have a look around and the feedback has been very positive.”
