NHS West Kent | News Release | 1 October 2008

A new GP-led health centre will be built in North Kent to enhance patient services.

NHS West Kent has selected a preferred bidder to provide GP services for the growing population of the Dartford and Gravesham area.

The new health centre will open early next year and offer GP services, including a walk-in service, from 8am until 8pm, seven days a week.

This will make it easier for patients to see a GP or other practice staff in the evenings and at weekends.

Three bidders went through a comprehensive evaluation process and it was agreed that Fleet Healthcare would be the best partner for NHS West Kent in developing this additional facility.

Fleet Healthcare is a company made up of seven local GP practices who have teamed up with a development company. The new GP-led health centre will be organised by local GPs, ensuring that it will complement the existing primary care services.

Detailed negotiations will start shortly, including a decision on the location of the new facility, with contracts being signed in the autumn.

Bob Deans, Deputy Chief Executive at NHS West Kent, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local GPs to team up with the independent sector to deliver world class primary health care to the local population.

“It is particularly pleasing that local practitioners have come out on top against a strong field of national players.”
